Multiple Formats: Contemporary Art Book Symposium weaves together conversations about artist books and higher education, pedagogical practices involving artist books, artist advocacy, and artist book distribution, collection, and access. Intended to be an elastic and inclusive forum for discussions about artist book publishing, Multiple Formats pays particular attention to publishing by graphic designers, the use and creation of artist books in visual arts programs, publishing as a personal and collaborative process, and other topics of interest.

The Boston Art Book Fair includes a great range of offerings, from top tier national publishers to individual artists making handmade books and zines.  Exhibitors include museums and galleries supporting artist catalogues and text-based projects, University-based graphic design, photography, magazines, sound and performance related projects, and more.  Boston Art Book Fair welcomes all audiences; from sophisticated art collectors to a teenager buying their first zine.

Esther will teach various techniques, including stab stitching and variations, chapbook stitching and variations, accordion folds and variations, flag (flip/flap) books, stitching signatures into concertina structures, and simple popups and/or flexagons (or as much as she can cover within the two-hour workshop!). Esther K Smith is the artistic director of Purgatory Pie Press, author of Making Books with Kids and Magic Books & Paper Toys, and editor of the Rizzoli reprint of WH Page’s Specimens of CHROMATIC WOOD TYPE, Borders &c
